Couples 55 and older said that back in the day their average courting process took around 78 days, while people under the age of 25 now only take around 24 days to start using the terms boyfriend and girlfriend. With the constant flow of text messages, tweets and emails, younger couples are more likely to start a relationship sooner than their older counterparts who didn’t have any technology to speed the process up.

Twitter is king.

140 characters and some witty hash tags do the trick these days? Apparently so because Twitter has overtaken texting and phone calls as the most common way of securing a new love interest. It wasn’t mentioned in the article, but this may just be the case with the younger crowd; texting may still be #1 with people in their mid 20s-early 30s.

The 3 day rule is going out the window.

With all of this fancy new technology, people are no longer abiding by the 3 day rule when contacting someone after a first date. 68% of respondents said they had no problem contacting their new guy or girl within 4 hours of their first date.

Love letters are out and sexting is in.

The days of handwritten love letters have come and are almost gone. Only 1 in every ten couples from the study said they still write the occasional love letter to their partner. On the flip side is the rise in sexting between partners. More than a third of the couples in the study admitted to sending sexy pictures to their boyfriend or girlfriend.

Technology gives people an easy out with break ups.

36% of the study’s participants said they would be fine breaking up with someone through a text message. 27% and 13% of the participants said a text message or a form of social media would be a suitable way to break up with someone.

What does it take for people to fall in love nowadays?
